Master’s Program in Applied Economics and Finance
The MSc degree in Applied Economics and Finance aims at training specialized scientists that intend to work in private sector firms, banks, international organizations or the public sector. Also, the program may serve as a foundation for research activities and degrees.
The program was originally established in 1994, by the Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Today, and since1998, it is offered in collaboration with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Financial Mathematics, of the University of the Aegean. Since 2005, the program is supported by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Greece (SOEL).
The Msc program offers three distinct specializations:
1. Financial Analysis and Policy
2. Applied Accounting and Auditing
3. Public Auditing
1. Financial Analysis and Policy
Entry requirements: applicants may hold a university degree in economics, political sciences, law, mathematics, or other applied or quantitative sciences such as engineering, statistics, finance. Very good knowledge of English is mandatory.
Duration of studies: 3 semesters full time, or up to 6 semesters part time.
Collaborations: The Program is offered in collaboration with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Financial Mathematics of the University of the Aegean.
Teaching staff: courses are taught by professors of the Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and professors of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Financial Mathematics of the University of the Aegean.
Employment opportunities: graduates may be employed in banks, financial institutions, private firms, international organizations, the public sector.
As this is the most academic oriented specialization, it provides a solid basis for those interested in continuing their studies with PhD.
Fees: 4.800€. They are paid in equal instalments at the beginning of each six-month period.
2. Applied Accounting and Auditing
It is addressed to university degree graduates who intend to make a career as certified auditors- accountants, or, wish to occupy an important position in the hierarchy of an auditing or accounting firm.
Duration of studies: 4 semesters full time.
Teaching staff: courses are taught by professors of the Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Αccounting and auditing courses are predominantly taught and supported by experienced members of the Institute of Education of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Greece (SOEL).
Partners: the program is offered in collaboration with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Greece (SOEL) representing the bridge between theory and the labor market. The curriculum of “Applied Accounting and Auditing” covers most of the topics included in the exams for the auditing profession. Students of the Master’s program wishing to participate in professional examinations το Certified Accountants, can transfer their grade to the corresponding course of the Master’s program.
Also, the program and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) partners in learning. 12 of the 15 subjects required to obtain the internationally recognized professional title, ACA, of the “Association of Chartered Accountants”, are accredited, for the students of the Master’s program.
Employment opportunities: graduates are highly competitive in the professional field as this program has established itself in the labor market since 2005.They can be employed in auditing firms, accounting firms, financial sectors of firms, financial departments of private or public sector institutions.
Fees: 7.400€. They are paid in equal instalments at the beginning of each six-month period.
3. Public Auditing
It is addressed to: university graduates who are already employed, or intend to be employed, or, to cooperate with the public sector. In particular, it is addressed to those who wish to become acquainted with the application of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) and the International Auditing Standards, the gradual implementation of which has already begun in the Greek public sector.
Duration of studies: 3 semesters full time. Currently, the program is offered as part time, within 4 semesters.
Teaching staff: courses are taught by professors of the Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Αccounting and auditing courses are predominantly taught by experienced members of the Institute of Education of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Greece (SOEL). Specialized scientists with many years of professional and teaching experience, also participate in the teaching of specific topics.
Collaborations: the program is offered in collaboration with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Greece (SOEL).
Employment: graduates may be employed in public services, ministries, public enterprises, universities, local government, hospitals, insurance companies, organizations that collaborate with the public sector.
