Welcome note by the Director of studies

Dear friends, and students,

welcome to the website of our graduate program in Applied Economics and Finance, which has been continuously operating since 1994, marking a notable historical journey. Hundreds of distinguished scientists and professionals have graduated from this program, contributing to various sectors such as the financial departments of businesses, public financial services, banks, ministries, universities, financial service companies, international organizations, and auditing firms, in Greece and abroad.

The program offers three specializations:

  1. Financial Analysis and Policy
  2. Applied Accounting and Auditing
  3. Public Auditing

On our website, you will find information about the curriculum, tuition fees, application process and deadlines, scholarships, faculty members, study regulations, as well as information tailored to each specialization.

Before you begin browsing, I would like to describe the special features of the program, covering its development from 1994 to the present. I believe that someone interested in any specialization of the Program should be aware that its basic characteristics are as follows:

  • The combination of economic theory and applied economics through the analysis of tools, practices, techniques, and policy proposals.

  • The curriculum reflects the joint effort of the faculty members of the Department of Economics, of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and is the outcome of their collaboration with internationally recognized economists, experienced scientists, as well as professionals who contribute to the program with their experience and specialized knowledge.

  • Dynamic evolution over time. The curriculum and directions are adjusted to address the progress of science in specific fields, the needs of the Greek economy and society, the availability of instructors, the demand from students for specific subjects, and the lack of interest in others.

  • Collaborations developed with other academic institutions and professional bodies. The most significant ones that continue to date include:

  • The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Financial Mathematics of the University of the Aegean, with which we have had collaboration since 1998. The collaboration involves both the administration of the program and the teaching of subjects that mainly cover the field of applied financial mathematics, such as actuarial mathematics, risk analysis, statistics, econometrics with applications in finance.

Collaboration with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Greece (SOEL) has been ongoing since 2005. This partnership specializes in assigning the teaching of specific subjects in auditing and accounting to experienced professionals and specialized scientists, as proposed by the Supervisory Board of SOEL.

Additionally, graduates of the MSc in Applied Economics and Finance with specialization in “Applied Accounting and Auditing” receive educational adequacy for the subjects specified for the practice of the auditing profession. Collaboration with SOEL has underscored the applied nature of the program and enhanced its recognition in the professional realms of auditing, accounting, and finance.

Furthermore, it has highlighted the specialization Applied Accounting and Auditing as the preferred choice among candidates at the national level, for many years.

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW). Collaboration at the level of educational seminars and the recognition of teaching units for obtaining the

Collaboration between professional bodies and universities constitutes an innovative scheme that strengthens the university’s connections with the job market and, more broadly, promotes the integration of theory and practice by incorporating the valuable experience of professionals into the curriculum.

At the same time, it enhances the prestige of the acquired title in the job market and provides an incentive for research in practical applications. In this type of collaboration, the Department of Economic Sciences of the NKUA has been a pioneer in Greece.

Finally, do not hesitate to contact us for any questions regarding the program or any specialization that interests you. Send us an email, call us, or visit us.
